In most ways, the HP Color LaserJet CM2320nf MFP ($699 direct) is one of the best color laser all-in-ones (AIOs) yet for the price. It offers good speed and output quality plus almost any AIO function you can think of. Unfortunately, it stubs its toe on one fundamental feature by leaving out duplexing, the ability to print on both sides of the page. (You can get duplexing in a significantly more expensive model, but you'd also be paying for other features you may not need.) What you're left with is an AIO that's well worth considering, but one duplexer short of the slam-dunk winner it could have been.

Software

Clearly targeted for a small office or workgroup, the CM2320nf prints, scans, and faxes over a network and can be used as a standalone fax machine and color copier. In addition, it gives you two choices for sending e-mail: It works as a standalone e-mail sender and can also scan to a PC on your network, automatically opening a new message with the PC's e-mail program and attaching the scanned document to the message.

Despite the lack of a duplexer (even as an option), the paper handling should be adequate for most offices, with a standard capacity of 300 sheets divided into a 250-sheet drawer and 50-sheet multipurpose tray. The maximum is 550 sheets with an optional second drawer ($149.99 direct). On the scanner side, the flatbed is limited to a maximum of letter size, but in addition to letting you scan, fax, and copy multipage documents, the 50-page automatic document feeder (ADF) can handle legal-size paper.

There are two other models in the CM2320 series. If you don't need the fax or standalone e-mail features, you can save a little money by getting the CM2320n ($599 direct). On the other hand, if you have a looser budget, you can get the CM2320fxi ($899 direct), with the second 250-sheet tray, the ability to print directly from memory cards, and both a print duplexer and a duplexing ADF. According to HP, the three printers are otherwise identical, so my comments here about speed and output quality should apply to all three.

As with most color laser AIOs, the CM2320nf is big enough, at 21.7 by 19.6 by 19.4 inches (HWD), so you won't want to share a desk with it. It's also heavy enough, at 59.3 pounds, that you'll probably want some help moving it into place.

Default apps on mac os. While versatile, Preview will NOT allow you to make changes to PDF’s with editable content. Follow these instructions to set Adobe Acrobat Reader as the default application for opening PDF files.Step 1:Single click a PDF file you wish to open or any PDF file in general while holding the Control key.

Setting up on a network is standard fare: Remove the packing materials, plug in the power cord and cable, load paper, and run the automated installation routine from disc. I installed the printer on a Windows XP system, but HP says it also comes with drivers and a full set of programs for Vista, XP x64, and Mac OS 10.3 and later. In addition, it comes with printer and scanner drivers—but no fax driver—for Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003, and you can also download print drivers for Linux and Citrix from the HP Web site.

I ran into one installation issue that I've seen in other recent HP color laser AIOs. When network setup finished, everything worked except the ability to give a scan command from the front panel. You have to finish this part of the setup manually, using HP's Solution Center software. The manual setup isn't hard, but it is an unnecessary chore. Using front-panel commands is the most convenient way to scan over a network. With them, you can walk over to the AIO with your document, scan it, and then bring it back to your desk, all in one trip. There's no good argument for the installation program not setting up the feature automatically.

Once installed, the CM2320nf works at appropriate speeds for its engine rating of 21 pages per minute for both monochrome and color. I timed it on our business applications suite at a total of 13 minutes 15 seconds. That's a touch slower than the somewhat lower-priced Brother MFC-9440CN, which at 11:25 is notable for its speed. On the other hand, it's a lot faster than the 20:47 total for the still-lower-priced Editors' Choice HP Color LaserJet CM1312nfi MFP. The CM2320nf also did particularly well for photos, averaging 20 seconds for each 4-by-6 print and 22 seconds for each 8-by-10.

Output quality is also an overall plus for the printer. Text quality is a bit below par for a laser, but definitely good enough for most business needs. More than half of the fonts on our text test were well formed and easily readable at 6 points, and some were readable at smaller sizes. Unless you have an unusual need for, say, 4-point type in legal contracts, the printer should handle any text you need to print.

Graphics output is superb, with no flaws worth mentioning. The quality is passes muster for anything up to and including marketing materials like trifold brochures and one-page glossy handouts. Photo quality, similarly, is in the top tier for a color laser AIO, and easily good enough for client newsletters and marketing materials. You can even take advantage of HP's glossy photo paper for printing, say, photos of houses to give to potential buyers in a real estate office.

I ran across one annoying issue: On my tests, all the paper came out with a stubborn if slight curl that made flipping through the pages and squaring off a batch difficult. HP has since identified the cause as a manufacturing specification that allowed more leeway than it should have, and says it's tightening the specification. HP also says that if you get an early production model that adds an unacceptable curl to the pages, the issue will be covered under the warranty, and HP will repair or replace the printer, as needed.

With this hiccup taken care of, the HP Color LaserJet CM2320nf MFP is an attractive choice, with its great-looking graphics and photos and reasonably high-quality text. I'd like it even better if this model had a duplexer, at least as an option, but if you don't need to duplex, the CM2320nf may be the perfect AIO for your small office needs.
